Traci,We welcome paittnes at all ages. We actually encourage children getting an initial visit at least by age three earlier if possible. Coming in at an early age accomplishes a couple of things. It allows the child the chance to become acclimated to the dental environment early on and to learn not to fear dental visits. Dental fear is a major source of behavioral difficulties that interfere with getting optimal dental treatment as the child gets older. Another goal of early visits is to meet the parents and answer any questions they may have on home care and helping establish good dental habits as early as possible. One particular area that we often see, and try to counsel parents on how to avoid, is the phenomenon of baby bottle cavities. These occur most often when a young child is allowed to take a bottle of formula, milk, or juice to bed. The child actively sips all night, keeping their teeth soaked in a bath of sugars which normal oral bacteria metabolize, beginning the process of tooth decay. Yet another goal of early visits is to allow us to evaluate the presence of any abnormalities that may require treatment by a specialist. The earlier a child is evaluated the better the odds any potential dental problems can be avoided. We provide dental care for the entire family, and believe that true long-term oral health is part of a cultural mindset that begins at home with participation from every family member. I encourage you to call our office at (706)494-2844 to find out more about our services or to schedule a consultation. Thank you for asking and we hope to hear from you soon!Dr. Collier
